Smallest Words Have Biggest Impact

Modifiers, qualifiers, and the quiet mechanics of language carry far more of a media message than the words we actually notice.

Attention goes to nouns and verbs — the claims, the actors, the actions. Meanwhile the small words are doing the persuasive work: reportedly, allegedly, surged, merely, even.

The Qualifier That Does Not Qualify

Some hedges genuinely limit a claim. Others create the appearance of caution while leaving the assertion fully intact — the claim is planted, and the qualifier stands nearby as an alibi.

The argument is rarely in the sentence. It is in the adverb.

Reading for the Small Words

The remedy is unglamorous: read the sentence twice, once for what it says and once for how it is angled. Strip the modifiers and see what claim actually remains standing.
